About EFT

Emotionally Focused Therapy, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is a therapy modality based on the attachment, systemic and humanistic theories of John Bowlby, Salvador Minuchin and Carl Rodgers respectively. EFT offers individuals, couples and families a roadmap to adult love and the means to make adult relationships flourish.

EFT is the most rigorously researched modality of couples therapy. Published research studies empirically prove EFT to be the most effective of all the couples therapies and the modality with the longest lasting results. Ninety percent of distressed couples undergoing EFT therapy report dramatic improvement in the overall satisfaction in their relationship. More than 7 out of 10 couples report complete recovery from distress.

EFT shows couples how to create the kind of love they always wanted and dreamed of having.

EFT can be successfully applied to individuals, couples and families.

Testimonials

"First I want to thank you so much Joe for the opportunity to learn from you! I taught in the Educational Psychology Department at UT for over 30 years and after working with students and other faculty, I truly consider you a master teacher! I love the way that you are able to simplify, clarify, and deepen understanding. I also love your use of metaphor and practice. You create the space for learning, sort of like a herding dog. You got us pointed in the right direction and then were on the periphery, guiding us to not stray. Simply wonderful!" -- Leslie M.

"I highly recommend professional training with Joe. Joe is such an engaging trainer who not only teaches the fundamental skills to be an effective EFT therapist but he helps you to experience the true heart of EFT. Joe's training takes you on an emotional roller coaster. I personally experience tears, laughter and everything in between when I am learning from and being inspired by Joe. Training with Joe has been life changing for me and I believe for many of my clients who now also experience the benefits of EFT and EFIT." -- Leah H.

Basic Trainings

  • EFT Externship:

An ICEEFT-endorsed EFT Externship is the introductory 28-30 hour training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the first step towards certification. Led by a Certified EFT Trainer, this 4-day workshop includes the observation of live and/or video recorded therapy sessions, presentations of theory and clinical techniques, skills training exercises, and discussion of specific cases, clinical material and issues. An Externship in EFT will provide you with a roadmap to work with your clients’ underlying emotions and facilitate therapy conversations that increase feelings of secure attachment, closeness and connection.

  • Core Skills:

EFT Core Skills training requires that participants have completed the EFT Externship. Core Skills Training led by a Certified EFT Trainer comprises four 2-day events that occur over the space of approximately one year and is limited to 12 participants, or up to 16 if there is a second Trainer or Certified EFT Supervisor co-leading the group. In the overall context of the EFT Tango, each of the 2-day events is dedicated to specific steps of the model and the therapeutic tasks and interventions characteristic of those steps.

Participants are required to present their own work through presentation of video recorded therapy sessions. Click here for the ICEEFT video release form. Registrants will be required to declare their professional designation.
